How to Choose a Power Supply for LED Strip

Power headroom, 12 or 24 V, dimming and IP — how to choose the right driver so the strip lasts.

The power supply (driver) is the heart of an LED strip. A wrongly sized unit is the most common reason a strip flickers, dims or fails early. Selection starts with power: add up the consumption of every metre of strip and add 20–30% headroom. For example, 5 metres of 14.4 W/m strip draws 72 W, so choose a unit of at least 90–100 W.

Second, the voltage must match the strip: 12 or 24 V. A 24 V strip is preferable for long runs, as it suffers less from voltage drop. Mind the IP rating too: a dry room is fine with an ordinary unit, while a damp zone or outdoors needs a sealed one (IP65–IP67).

If you want to adjust brightness, choose a dimmable unit and a compatible controller. The Electrica Group catalogue has 12 and 24 V units and dimmable drivers of various ratings, matched to work with the strips — true to our "For Long Life" principle. If in doubt, our specialists will calculate the power you need.
